At approximately 9:40 p.m. yesterday, following a traffic stop on Kietzke Lane by the Jones-West Ford dealership, an officer involved shooting left one officer shot, one suspect dead, and another suspect at large.

The suspect is described as a hispanic, male juvenile in his teens. Deputy Chief of Reno Police Tom Robinson could not provide a more detailed description at the impromptu press briefing.

“We are at every address we know he’s associated with right now,” said Robinson.

Per the Washoe County Officer Involved Shooting Protocol, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office will lead the investigation, according to WSCO Public Information Officer Bob Harmon.

Robinson confirmed that all police officers directly involved with the shooting would be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. He also said that all witness officers were taken to the station so that they could provide their statements to investigators.

As of 12:30 a.m. over 100 law enforcement officers were on the scene collecting evidence and searching for the suspect. The law enforcement officers are members of the Reno Police Department, Sparks Police Department, University of Nevada Police Services, and the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office. Robinson also confirmed that, while they were not initially involved, federal agents from the DEA, ATF, and FBI were on scene to assist.

Alongside these officers the Sparks Police SWAT team deployed to the area to assist in the search for the suspect.

During the traffic stop when the officers approached the suspects’ vehicle, the suspects attempted to flee. After an exchange of gunfire left one officer down, and one suspect down, the second suspect fled.

“We heard a few gunshots,” said Alex Lofton, an employee at the gas station on the corner of Kietzke and Peckham. “… and we ran out here and saw all of this,” he added.

Both the officer and suspect were transported to a local hospital. According to Robinson, the suspect was declared deceased upon arrival. As of 12:30 a.m. the wounded officer was out of surgery and recovering with family members.

The Reno Police Department closed Kietzke Lane from Moana to Peckham, barricading much of the street as a crime scene. Their search perimeter stretched from Neil Road and Smithridge Drive, all the way to S. Virginia Street, by the Atlantis.
